1) Because it's the 2nd closest planet to the sun (first being Mercury).

2) Even though Mercury is closer to the sun than Venus, Venus has an atmosphere and Mercury doesn't.

3) The atmosphere in Venus is primarily composed of Carbon Dioxide. Thus, solar heat enters the planet but cannot leave it. The average temperature on Venus is 462° Celsius!
