Using visible movement as the defining characteristic of life is not enough because movements over very small scales will be invisible to the naked eye like movements of molecules.
So different criteria is used to tell that somethig is alive or not for eg: responsiveness to the environment; growth and change; ability to reproduce; have a metabolism and breathe; maintain homeostasis; being made of cells; passing traits onto offspring
