It was prophesised by Trelawney that 'The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord shall be born as the seventh month dies.' Afraid of his coming doom, Voldemort set out to kill all the children born in the end of the seventh month, i.e. July.

Turns out, there were two such children, Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom.

Voldy went to Harry Potter first.

In order to save their child, Lily and James came between Voldy and Harry. James, who was downstairs as he tried to stop Voldy, was killed first.

When Voldy went to Lily and Harry, Harry's mother stood herself between the two and was killed.

When Voldy went for Harry, the curse 'rebounded' and a part of Voldemort was stored in 'the only living thing in the room, Harry himself' and thus, Harry Potter also became a horcrux.

He killed Lily and James Potter because Sybill Trelawney had prophecied that the one to defeat him would come.He killed them because he thought that Harry was the one to defeat him.He killed them because they were standing in his way.
