why voltmeter is always connected above resistor. Is it compulsory. If yes than why?

voltmeer is connected parallel to the resistor because if the V oltmeter is connected in series due to high resistance and heating of V oltmeter the Voltmeter can end up burning and it can cause harm to the electrical circuit,....
