Awadh was annexed by British as it was a subsidiary state. The Nawaz of Awadh had signed a subsidiary alliance with lord Wellesley in 1801.nawab Wajid Ali shah of Awadh was accused of having misgoverned his state and of refusing to introduce reforms. His state was therefore annexed in 1856.
