Answer:

Lord Shiva is called Bholenath because of his generous and kind nature. He does not descriminate between good and bad "bhakta".For Him,bhakta is a bhakta be it a God,demon, king, beggar.Even though He is the supreme, He leads a life of "jogi".There is a story that once a thief went to steal from a temple ,he tried to steal the bell but could not reach so he climbed on the Shivalinga and took the bell...In spite of this disrspect ,the Lord appeared before him and was ready to give a boon.Surprisingly, the thief asked why he was given such opportunity. The lord said all people come with material offerings but the thief offered himself completely and Bholenath was pleased with this deed.

There is another story that tells ,He became servant for one of His devotee "Vidyapati".He was so pleased with the "Bhajans " of "Vidyapati" that He came down on the earth and served Him.

He can be pleased without much pomp and show,He just needs the devotion. The list of His generosity is infinite.
