He was the first powerful ruler of the dynasty 1. He made Patliputra his capital. Chandragupta 1 married Kumaradevi, a princess of the powerful Lichchhavis, he managed to carve out a big empire which covered modern Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh. He adopted the title of 'Maharajadhiraja' which means 'the kings of kings'.
