Why was convict send to prison ? what was the punishment given to him.

The convict was sent to prison for stealing to buy food for his ailing wife Jeanne. Though it was a petty crime, yet he was sentenced to ten years where he was subjected to brutal treatment by the police. This changed his attitude and he lost his emotional being.
