Explanation:

Gandhiji wanted to study the bar examination as he had enough time and the course did not require much of study.
Studying in Cambridge or Oxford was an expensive as well as a lengthy course so it was not viable.
Hence he decided to go for the London matriculation examination.
Though it was a hard work but he never shied away from hard work.
He successfully cleared in English, French and Chemistry but failed to clear in Latin.
He however passed in Latin in his second attempt.
He continued his study of law and eventually got admission to the Inner temple in November 1888.

As the bar/law examinations did not need much study, Gandhiji did not feel constrained for time. He hence felt that he must not only be called to the Bar, but also have some literary degree too.
Gandhiji made inquiries about the 'Cambridge' and 'Oxford University' courses however gave up the idea of going to these places since it would imply higher expenses and a longer stay in 'England' than he was ready for. Eventually, he decided to appear for the 'London matriculation examination'.
Although it meant being diligent, he liked the hard work. Gandhiji progressed in his study of law and in '1888 November' was admitted to the 'Inner-temple' (one of the 4 Inns of London Court. To be called to the 'Bar and practise as a lawyer' in 'England and Wales', a person needs to belong to any of these Inns).
