  • On the eve of independence, India was poor stagnant and backward. There were heavy imports of foodgrains. It was important to be self-reliance.

  • 1) Self-sufficiency in foodgrains.

  • 2)Fall in foreign aid and reduced
  • dependence on imports which is possible when there is growth in domestic production.

  • 3) Rise in exports.

  • 4)Rise in contribution of industries in grass domestic product.

  • Also promoting self-reliance increase employment generation in an economy.
  • It is understandable that people who were recently freed from foreign domination should give importance to self-reliance.
