After the defeat and the death of Jaichand, Kannauj soon lost its importance and came under the control of the Delhi Sultanate after Iltutmish defeated the Gahadavala ruler (Jaichand's successor and son Harischandra) and annexed it to his kingdom. It made Kannauj strategically and commercially very important
