In the years following the First World War, the Khilafat movement was unrest by the Indian Muslims who joined the nationalist struggle of India with the Indian nationalists. This movement in India was led by Shaukat and Muhammad ʿAlī and by Abul Kalam Azad. The main reason why the movement launched in India was to save the Ottoman Empire. The main goal of this movement was to place extensive pressure on the British rule to preserve the state of the Sultan of Ottoman as the Caliph of Islam.
