Learning speech was an extremely challenging task for Helen because of her hearing and visual disabilities. It is a well-established fact that children who have the hearing disability, don’t learn to speak well. They have to take special training to learn to speak. The part of the brain that monitors and controls speech organs get activated with the help of hearing mechanism. In the case of hearing disability, that mechanism remains deactivated. Helen faced the same malfunctioning.

Though Helen had to face challenges on almost every step, however, the most arduous of all of them was learning to speak. Miss Sarah Fuller, principal of the Horace Mann School Learning, also helped Helen initially n learning to speak. Helen had to work very hard. She had to repeat each word and sentence many times for the right tone and pronunciation. She practiced untiringly. At times she became discouraged and weary too, but she never gave up. The Frost King episode, qualifying for Radcliffe, her challenges at the college, etc. all was trials to test the strength of her character. She faced all the difficulties courageously. Her entire life appeared to be full of obstacles which she overcame with commendable patience and grit. She was a great fighter against the personal weaknesses from whom we can learn many lessons of courage, perseverance and inner strength.

Learning was the extremely difficult task for the Helen this is because she could not "hear". The helen was the quite capable of making the noises but  she recounts that she was unable to learn the speech since she losses the capabilities of hearing the before the illness. She only was able to pronounce the water as the "wa-wa" She was having the wish to learn to talk but was still unable to do it . She didnot lost the heart and continue trying even her friend give courage to her.
