New orders from Berlin had banned teaching of French at the schools; now German was to be taught at the schools. M. Hamel had been asked to leave the school. He was feeling very emotional and patriotic that day. So, he did not scold anyone.
Hamel kind to Franz:
Mr. Hamel was kind to Franz as it was the last lesson of him in the school.
He simply ordered Franz that he should go to his seat, otherwise they have to start without him.
Franz was a little surprised at Mr. Hamel's behavior but doesn't understand anything.
