Mangal Pandey, a Sepoy who worked as a soldier in British India had refused to use the new cartridges assigned to them as gun powder. This was because the cartridges were suspected to be coated of cow and pig fats and it was against the Hindu and Muslim religion to kill these holy animals. To oppose this use Mangal Pandey killed one of his officers, Lieutenant Baugh. This is why Mangal Pandey was hanged to death.
