Mathilde's greatest
requirement in a husband was social position. Unfortuntely, her own
place in society only allowed for a husband defined as a "minor"
official. For Mathile, this would have been considered a great match.
She had no dowry, no expectations, no means of becoming known,
understood, loved or wedded by a man of wealth and distinction; and so
she let herself be married to a minor official at the Ministry of
Education.

Mathilda was married to a ‘minor official’ because of her own position in society.
The question is from the story 'The necklace' by Guy de Maupassant.
Mathilde was pretty, but she did not come from a rich family. If she was married to a rich man, or a high ranking official, her family would have had to give dowry during her marriage, Since the dowry was beyond her family’s economic status, she had to get married to someone who was from the same social class as her. That is why she was married not to an influential individual, but to a ‘minor official’.
