India did have a number of talented committed Statesmen who were willing to devote their life for the development of the country . Questions like whether somebody else among them would have been a better PM , have no meaning at this stage . Each person brings some strengths to the position and to the credit of great democratic traditions of that period , with whatever ideological differences , the Common Good was recognised .

Nehruji ‘s / his team’s unique contributions were to ensure a solid foundation for

Democracy & Secularism

Supporting the Rural- Agri based economy as well as simultaneous development of Infrastructure and Industrial Economy

Science & Technology , Higher Education

Not many would be able to comprehend that 1991 Liberalisation /Privatisation would not have been possible without the initial foundation & architecture ( Perhaps these could have been done much earlier say in early 80s , like China did ).

“ Nehruji & his team inherited a looted ,poor, illiterate Economy , with a poor industrial base ( British just alienated India from industrialisation) with host of Political /Social problems . He had to build a Democracy on a Solid Economic Foundation , with low agri productivity , famine ridden, no food , poor infrastructure , with limited /no resources

Nehruji did perhaps the best under the circumstances and initiated steps on Irrigation ( multi purpose projects), Education , Sciencye & Technology ( Space, Nuclear,CSIR), Defence ( Prodn units, DRDL ), Industrialisation , Power Infrastructure , Industrialisation ( Steel, Fertiliser ,Refineries etc), Institutes of higher Learning etc.

He has used the Economic Diplomacy to the best in getting Aid & technology for our development ( mostly from East European countries ,west was not keen)

So he was called the architect of Modern India with Democratic Institutions He did all this by not sacrificing any Democratic processes . He maintained the secularism core to our Nation . He was the face of “ Unity in Diversity”.
