Rajendra I was succeeded by his son Rajendra Chola. His illustrious 30 years reigns included consolidation as well as further expansionm. He led his victorious army up to the banks of the river Ganges, defeating and subduing several kingdoms along the way. He assumed the title of 'Gangaikonda' and built a new capital 'Gangaikondacholapuram' to commerate his great victory in north india. His expansion schemes included the conquest of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. His reign has been aptly described as the 'Golden Age of the Cholas'.
