why was reservation provided for certain castes in india? ?

Actually when reservations were started, it was that some castes such as the Muslims and the Sikhs were very minor in number and thus it became difficult for them to be represented in certain posts and appointments.
Thus the British started to provide reservation system for them to b represented equally which is still in practice today...

It was provided to them in order for upliftment of these castes, As they were backward classes.
