I think this question is from the lesson "How i taught my grandmother to read".

Actually Sudha Murty's grandmother touched her feet. This because she wanted to show her respect to a teacher who taught her to read and write within such a short period. She touched her feet as a student does to a teacher and not literally touching the feet of her granddaughter. But Sudha Murty was surprised because it is not the custom to touch the feet of juniors.
