Reason why the captain of the ship was so overjoyed:

The captain of the ship was overjoyed because after boarding the ship he came to know that the Smith was his old friend. The captain John smith's ship was destroyed by the big storm while sailing towards Rome. Some men on the ship told that the Smith had bad luck, and to escape from the storm, they captured and thrown him into the sea.

The waves of the sea were high at the moment and he might be being drowned in the sea. But, John smith was a great swimmer and reached the nearest island is called St. Mary’s. This island is near the coast of Nice. He had nothing to eat and the weather was very cold. But quickly some ship was coming into sight and he was seen by the members of the ship. The small rescue boat was sent to the island to save him and the boat was back to ship after the boarding of Smith. While boarding on the ship he was overjoyed because the captain of the ship was his old friend.
