Why was the civilization called Harappan civilization?

Answer:

Harappa was the first site of Indus Valley discovered in 1920s. Thus it is after this site that the civilization came to be known as Harappan Civilization. The name comes from the name of a nearby village Harappa, which is 1KM from the excavated site.
