why was the'dry cell' given the dry cell name ?

When we compare them to other type of cells, electrolyte in a dry cell does not appear in the liquid form.

Therefore, they are named as dry cells.

In other type of cells, for example, lead acid battery, the electrolyte is a dilute sulphuric acid, while in dry cell; it is in the paste form of ammonium chloride.
