why was the feeling of 'Nationalism' lacking among the Indians before the arrival of British ?

Because in those times , untouchability ruled the indian society. Indians were not united. They were divided in the basis of caste , creed ,religion and gender. Social evils such as sati pratha and slavery existed in the society .
