When the East India company started trading in subcontinent, they slowly started to take more interest in the region other than trade. The Britishers started breaking the unity of local rulers. The freedom of local rulers was getting reduced due to the following reasons:-
- Lack of unity among the local rulers: During the mid nineteenth century, local rulers were fighting against each other due to various reasons and couldn't unite to fight against the British.
- Superiority of the British army: In comparison to the Indian military, British soldiers had a whole lot of technological superiority. They had specialised training and conquered various Indian states.
- Divide and rule: British took the advantage of division of Indian Indian society on the grounds of caste, creed, economic status, etc. So they used divide and rule policy to eliminate the freedom of local rulers.
