The postmaster was at first ill hearted and unkind to Ali. He and the other members at the post office teased Ali for foolishly waiting for his daughter's letter. When the letter of his daughter arrived, the postmaster came to know that Coachman Ali had died. Thus, he felt so sorry for his behaviour towards Ali.
