Pungi was banned by emperor Aurangazeb for it had a shrill noise. It became one of the reeded noisemakers. However, people thought that it would be revived one day.
A barbar coming from a family of ancestral musicians took a hollow pipe narrower from one end and broader from the other. He made several holes in that. As the air passes, closing and opening of holes create different sounds. Everybody were impressed by it's sound in Shah's court. As the story goes since it was played first by nai and in Shah's chambers the instrument was named Shehnai.
The flowing waters of Ganga river inspired and encouraged Bismillah Khan to play and invent different new ragas. That's why He liked Ganga very much.
