The ticket collector had been shocked by the presence of Toto, the pet monkey, in Grandfather's big bag but recovered his presence of mind and classifying Toto as a "dog" demanded money for his ticket despite Grandfather's efforts to prove Toto a monkey and not a quadruped. In the end Grandfather was forced to pay for Toto's ticket...to get his own back he brought out his pet tortoise and asked the collector if he wished Grandfather to pay for its passage also. However the ticket collector declined, announcing in triumph that "it was not a dog."
