If you ask HOW instead:
We accept the big bang approach at both levels, it seem convincing, so here it goes:
Nearly 14 billion years ago, relative to our observations, the whole, I mean the EVERYTHING, the space the energy, was condensed into a single dimensionless point of infinite density, the initial singularity (singularity for the time before then doesn't affect our world at all, and also we are too dum b to understand it). Within fractions of a second (conventionally, very tiny part in millionth) the space and Everything started to expand, the space in itself expanded (yeah it was finite). Following this inflation, the universe remained stable for quite a long, until due to quantum fluctuations in the cooled down space gave birth to photons and particles that cane into existence and annihilated each other( yeah, the particles and their antiparticles counterparts). Due to some reason, in our universe, the particles won out and their existence with respect to their foe became a million in one. This time gravity separated from the Unified forces. These particles, the quarks and the leptons ( electrons, for non-physicists) clumped under force, quarks formed neutron and proton, and with electrons formed the Hydrogen and Helium atoms, which later fused to form stars and all the (5%) of the stuff in the universe. Since then the universe has been undergoing an accelerated expansion.
As to why:
Well, God plays dice prolly and made this Taffy to bear apes who would later work their @$$ off to ask this question!
