REVOLT OF 1857:

• The term "first war of Independence" was first coined by V.D Savarkar.

• Revolt of 1857 or Sepoy mutiny was the war against the Britishers.

• This war was first intiated by Mangal Pandey at Barrackpore near Kolkata.

• There are many reasons for the outbreak of this war.

• We cannot consider this war as the war of Independence as the independent rulers fought independently for their kingdoms.

• They neither fought for India nor they fought unitedly.

• So, we cannot consider this revolt as the first war of Independence.

Revolt of 1857 was known as the first war of independence because it was for the first time that our entire nation irrespective of the caste, creed, race, and religion had come together and staged an armed protest against the Britishers to gain independence from their colonial rule.
