The YMCA pool was safer as compared to the Yakima River as the depth of the river was unknown and there were more chances of getting drowned there. On the other hand, the YMCA pool was two or three feet deep and the safety guards were also present there. Hence, there were fewer chances of being drowned. The YMCA pool was safer for a new learner. Since Douglas had a fear of water since his childhood, therefore he decided to learn swimming in the YMCA pool and not in Yakima River.
