There was an financial crisis because France was waging a war with england for many years due to which all the money was drained in the army.When louis 16 Came to the throne there was very less money in the treasury because of continuous war

Long years of war had drained the financial resources of France as France under King Louis XVI had helped the 13 American colonies to gain their Independence from the Britain. the war added more than a billion livres to a debt that has already risen to more than two billion livres.
