Why was there a rift in the brahmo samaj of india?
Answers
Gradually a rift developed between the old conservative group of the Brahma Samaj and the reformers led by Keshab Chandra Sen. Ultimately, there was a split. The old party led by Debendranath Tagore came to be known as the Adi Brahmo Samaj. In 1868, Keshab Chandra Sen founded the Brahmo Samaj of India.
Explanation:
Although Keshab Chandra Sen had become the leader of the Brahmo Samaj with the help of Debendranath Tagore, conflict of opinion began within a very short time between them regarding intercaste marriage, holding of sacred thread, chanting of prayers in bengali language etc.
Due to this conflict of opinion between Debendranath Tagore and Keshab Chandra Sen, the Brahmo samaj splitted up and Keshab Chandra and his followers formed a seperate organization known as the Indian Brahmo samaj and the main organization under the leadership of Debendranath Tagore was known as the Adi Brahmo Samaj.
