The First World War was a period of great turmoil in the world, particularly Europe. About 9 million people died and 20 million people were injured in the war. European cities and industries were devastated. Countries were heavily in debt. As a result, there was great anxiety after the war about economic recovery and prospect of finding employment.
Moreover, by 1929, the world was in the grip of the Great Depression. It started in the US with a fall in agricultural prices and a series of bank crises. The Great Depression caused very high levels of unemployment adding to the anxiety and uncertainty about work.
