William Scott also know as "The sleeping sentinel" was a militant from USA. One day he was found sleeping near the camp he was recruited. Due to this carelessness he was court martialed where they announced a death sentence to him.

He tried to defend himself since he was exhausted as he had voluntarily taken part in a comrade a night before due to which he fell asleep. Regardless of the reason which was known by the court and published in several newspapers, he was going to be executed. On the day of execution, Abraham Lincoln sent a pardon letter. With this letter, William's life was spared and he lived on until a war killed him.

This story was later on portrayed in a poem and in several movies. The grave of William Scott has embedded the title 'The sleeping sentinel' along with the pardon received by Lincoln.
