EDTA can be used as a carbon source in growth media. EDTA is also very ligand to most cations, therefore it either might be helpful for the uptake of essential elements might prohibit the toxic elements.
Some media contain Ca(2+) and PO4(3-) which would form a precipitation in absence of EDTA.
