Because:-

1- petroleum is now available in very less amount and will exhibit soon

This graphic shows imports of whale oil and the more highly prized sperm whale oil to the USA. Note that whale oil declines after 1840 and sperm oil a little after.

Now the US oil industry only began with the Titusville well in 1859, and this was comparatively small amounts. Thus contrary to what is often supposed, it was not the booming oil industry which caused the lower use of whale oil. It was in fact the lack of whale oil which caused the oil industry to be successful.

In the first half of the 19th century, North America was in an industrial revolution, moving from cowboys and farmers to cities and factories, greatly helped by the railroads. As with the British industrial revolution, this was lubricated by whale oil and lit by lamps and candles for which sperm oil was particularly good.

So imports rose and rose. Until there did not seem to be as many whales around, and there was increased competition. This stifled the expansion of industry. The high demand and low supply meant that other sources could become economic, enough to go to the trouble of drilling and pumping. Hence entrepreneurs began.

Now we come to the really good bit. The oil out of the ground contains thousands of components from thick bitumen to volatile liquids and gases. It needed to be separated, which meant distillation, in pot stills (like moonshine). To separate out the different components meant distilling and distilling again. However, some engineers adapted the Coffey still (for whisky) which essentially had pots stacked on top of each other to make the distillation columns which are so characteristic of oil refineries. Thus American chemical engineering was born.
