Carpet is made of soft materials like wool. According to Newton's Second Law of motion, the force experienced by an object is equal to the product of its mass and it's acceleration.

This means

force = mass \times acceleration

This means that

f = m \times ( \frac{v - u}{t} )

Here, 'f' is the force experienced

'm' is the mass

'v' is the final velocity of the body

'u' is the initial velocity of the body

't' is the time taken by the body

This means that the force experienced by an object is inversely proportional to the time taken.

This is what a carpet does.

A carpet increases the time in which the force is experienced by the body. Hence, reducing the force acting on us and hurting us comparitively less than a hard surface

Hope this helps

We get more hurt when we fall on a hard surface because the particles are so rigid that it doesn’t displace more and hence apply force oppositely

While

In case of carpet,when you apply force on it,the particles are quite free to move. So they apply force oppositely but are displaced from their mean position
