Diwali is harmful to our environment but then too it is celebrated 'cause it is an important festival all over India.
According to hindus, on diwali, lord ram returned foe the vanvas of 14 yrs.
According to jains, lord mahavira's rigorous tapa ended. Many other beliefs of various religions have given a great importance to this festival. Therefore it is celebrated althougj it is very harmful. But it is not like we can't celebrate eco friendly diwali. We can't just light air lanterns instead of burning crackers. Also we can make rangolis, put diyas etc instead of crackers. We have much else to do in diwali. We can celebrate diwali without crackers.
