The correct answer is that a metal is generally electropositive and a non metal is generally electronegative so that's why. Metals have tendency to donate the electrons whereas non metals have tendency to gain electrons so that's why they make a strong ionic bond mostly. However some non metals forms covalent bonds with other non metals like SO2
