According to what I was taught in teacher training college, the expression “Good night!” should only be used when you think you are not going to see or talk to the addressee again in the said day.
So, when in the evening, you should say “Good evening!” when arriving, and “Good night!” when leaving, no matter what the time is. And no matter whether you are going to bed or doing any other activities afterwards.
