This is because at the point of a large amount of light is blocked causing darkness. After the eclipse when sunlight begins to appear, the intensity of light is too high that it may cause total blindness.
This is the reason why we should watch the eclipse with eye protection and not with open eyes.

Because our eyes has natural convex lens and the outer part of our cornea also act as convex lens which converge the ray when we look up and harm our eye....
