Sea water is made smooth by oil and so oil is sprinkled on its surface because it calms the rough element. Oil also damps sea waves by forming a thick, viscous film at the top of the water that resists water motion . Oil calms the sea waves because the surface film of oil prevents the generation of ripples on the exposed crests of the waves. Thus made smooth surface makes the wind less able to grab onto the wave and force it to break.
