To understand ratios my friend... imagine a long stick... and say you want to divide the stick into two parts..... the stick is 1m => 100 cm long and is divided into 20cm and 80 cm..... you can say you have divided it into two parts 20 and 80 cm respectively...
but when you want to express it in terms of ratio....
you need to understand you are comparing 1 broken length of the stick to the other....
20 to 80..... which can be expressed in the simplest ratio... 1:4 after you divide 20 and 80......
well....
your question now is..... why we take 1:4 as 1x and 4x....
this is to find the common multiple for the simplest ratio...
see... 20 cm and 80 cm ... two divided lengths of the stick summed up to give the total length .. i.e; 1m...
similarly two simple ratios with a common multiple sum up to give the total length of the stick...
1x + 4x =100cm
x=20...(common multiple)
which will give the original parts into which the stick has been broken into...
we can say that the stick has been broken into 1 part and 4 parts equally... so 5 parts of the common multiple will give the original length
1x=20 cm
and
4x=80 cm
now
apply the same concept to any ratio question you get
