Hey!
first of all we generally use algebra to know the unknown value and put an alphabet in the place of the unknown piece of information such as 'x'
this is also referred as variable as the value is not fixed and can vary over different situations
we don't yet have any other convenient and mathematical method to calculate an unknown value .
infact the mathematical operation used to find an unknown mathematical value is itself known as algebra
consider these statements
"why do we use algebra for problem solving and finding unknown values."
and
"the method we use for solving algebra and finding unknown values is called algebra"
here lies your answer
Hope it helps
