Why we use the comparative adjectives such as prior, junior, senior, inferior, prefer, elder, etc are followed by ‘to' instead of ‘than'?

The words - senior, junior, superior, inferior, prior, exterior, posterior, ulterior, anterior etc came from Latin. That's why 'to' is used except 'than'.
