I won’t say the were not allowed to go to school exactly.
Every system changes and people take time to adopt new system.
Before so many years (before 1000 of years), I think they made gender base system, and divide task accordingly. They thought that a girl should do task which include house making and boy should do task like bringing necessary things in house.
So they start giving training in order to make life peaceful. and it became trends.
If you have done study of history or mythology you will come to know that there were various types of arts and skills which were be taught to kids. (According to Jainism / Hinduism - girls used to learn 64 types skills/arts , where as boys used to learn 72 types of skills/arts)
Then slowly different things came in picture, different technology, skills, arts came in picture which were not the part of regular routine and needed special school system.
As this school system were not part in house learning method, normally boys got advantage of it. And then it became the practice.
It’s very difficult to change system. It’s human tendency to resist the change. They just keep old rituals in flow without thinking. And due to it, many society were not ready to let girl to go out to learn things. They found old system is better. They didn't think why the system was like that, they just adopted it and followed it.
