The printed books were popular even among the illiterate people due to following reasons :

(i) The common people lived in the world of oral culture. They had sacred texts readout, ballads recited and folk tales narrated. Knowledge was transferred orally generally to illiterate people.

(ii) Illiterate people collectively heard a story, saw a performance, some illiterate people were attracted by beautiful pictures printed on the books.

(iii) Even those who did not read could certainly enjoy listening to books being readout . So printers began publishing popular ballads and folks tales, and such books would be profusely illustrated with pictures. These were then sung and recited at gatherings in villages and in taverns in towns.
