The religious revolution that took place in the Western church in the 16th century was termed as Reformation also known as  Protestant Reformation . Its prominent leaders were Martin Luther and John Calvin.

Education was the privilege of only wealthy aristocrats and priests  but the reformers brought about the change by making it  available to all. Their schools provided education to girls and saw the importance of developing the potential of every child for the glory of God.They believed that the primary responsibility of educating children laid upon the church and parents. They regarded  teachers as officers and servants of the church who needed to be  well trained in the subjects they would teach but also secure a degree in theology and possess mature and good character.
