Survey is a broad term that involves the processes of examining a condition, situation, or value or to enquire someone or a group in order to collect data for the analysis of some aspect of a group or area. In geography, survey is conducted to determine the exact form, boundaries, position, extent, etc., of (a tract of land, section of a country, etc.) by linear and angular measurements and the application of the principles of geometry and trigonometry.
Detailed surveys were carried out by the British to map the entire country.


Revenue surveys were conducted in villages in order to know the topography,the quality of soil, flora, fauna, cropping pattern, etc.Towards the end of the nineteenth century, census operations were held ever ten years, which provided information about the distribution of population in different provinces, castes, religions and occupations.Other surveys such as botanical surveys, archaeological surveys, zoological surveys, forest surveys and anthropological surveys were also carried out.
